Join us at Clark's Trading Post
on Saturday, September 16th for a day of family fun and railroading adventures during the
annual White Mountain Central Railroad Days. Check out their website for a
map and
directions. We
will have reserved parking for club members, so clean it up if you want to
show it off.
The ticket office opens at 9:30 and you should arrive before noon if you
want to have a chance to see all the attractions and enjoy lunch at one of
their food concessions, or bring a picnic to eat in the picnic grove. Show
your BMW CCA membership card and a NH driver's license for free admission
for you and your family members (or one non-family member guest).
There are no events to display.
Clark's has many attractions, including a 1/2 hour trained black bear show,
train rides, a haunted house, several museums featuring antique cars and
fire engines as well as other Americana, an old fashioned ice cream parlor,
and other things to delight kids of all ages.
If you plan to ride the water bumper boats, be ready to get wet, and you can bring your climbing shoes and check out the "Old Man" climbing tower.
If you like trains, don't miss the 2 1/2 mile, 30 minute excursion on the
classic White Mt. Central Railroad. Steam across the scenic Pemigewasset
River and through rustic woods and into the past! The tour takes visitors on
one of only three wood-burning steam Climax Locomotives still running in the
world and crosses over the only standing Howe-Truss covered bridge still in
use today.
The weekend of our visit is White Mountain Central Railroad Days, with Shay, Heisler, Porter, and Baldwin steam locomotives, a Reo Railbus, a Firefly Railcar and GE 65-ton diesel engines in operation with special excursions. Rail fans can ride steam locomotives and see unique historical rail equipment on display.
If you want to add some driving fun to the day, drive the Kancamagus Highway
from Conway to Lincoln on the way to Clark's, or from Lincoln to Conway on
the way home. Either way, this roughly 35 mile stretch of NH 112 has lots
of smiles per mile, with plenty of scenery. If the foliage has started to
show its autumn colors, it's a beautiful ride through the national forest,
and even if it's still just green, it's relaxing. But do allow the time to
enjoy it, since it's not a fast road; plan an hour end to end, and extra for
the travel between Conway and wherever you might be starting.
Clark's provides a great day of fun for everyone in the family and the Kancamagus drive always a treat!
